LAB AST 3 (Lab Assistant)

POSITION OVERVIEW

A Lab Assistant 3 position is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Brett Poulin in the Environmental Toxicology department at the University of California at Davis (https://poulinlab.ucdavis.edu/). We’re seeking a highly motivated individual to assist in the analysis pf samples by wet chemistry techniques for research projects related to metal contaminants.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, the Laboratory Assistant will (1) analyze samples by wet chemistry techniques for research projects related to metal contaminants, (2) process and analyze data according to quality control/assurance protocols, (3) enter data in a laboratory database, (3) document methods, guidelines, and templates, (4) oversee laboratory safety and general organization, and (5) work with the Lab Principal Investigator (PI, Assistant Professor Brett Poulin) to coordinate project goals and tasks with undergraduate researchers (oversee a student assistant). Periodically participate in field studies that may require air travel for up to 6 days at a time. Laboratory and field training will be provided.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications:
• 1 year of prior experience working in a research laboratory
• Experience analyzing and plotting data
• Proficiency with routine functions of Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to follow standardized protocols and carefully record and enter data.
• Professional, clear communication skills to coordinate with supervisor.

Preferred qualifications:
• Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biological sciences, or a closely related field or equivalent knowledge and experience
• Laboratory experience in analytical and/or environmental chemistry is highly preferred
• Experience maintaining a quality management system in a laboratory is preferred
• Previous research experience working in the lab and field, including techniques of UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, ion chromatography (IC), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and cold-vapor atomic fluorescence spectroscopy (CVAFS).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Access for database management
